LIFTING THE LID ON WHAT happens in applied sport and business
It’s time to learn from the applied world and the people that are doing it at the very highest level. This is not a traditional, research-heavy conference, it’s an event to ask questions, gain clarity, and learn how to succeed in the applied world of performance nutrition and business.

WELCOME TO THE
HOSTED by: Dr Daniel Martin and Dr James Morehen
Our inaugural event aims to redefine professional development for performance nutritionists and sports dietitians.
Ideally located at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, home of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and hosted in partnership with Birmingham City University, this one-day intensive experience is designed to help you level-up how you implement sports nutrition in practice and business.
Unlike conferences that focus heavily on research dissemination, BlackBox Nutrition Conference delves into the practical realities of nutrition implementation in pro and elite sports and business.
This event sets the stage to open the "Black Box" of applied nutrition practice that typically remains hidden from view.
SPONSORS
All food for the event will be generously provided by our main sponsor, Meals.co.uk, ensuring you’re fuelled and focused throughout the day.
MEET THE SPEAKERS
Our speakers are practitioners who work at the highest levels of sport and business, professionals who have refined their approaches through years of hands-on experience with world-class athletes and teams. Better yet, these aren't just any old practitioners—this line-up are recognised leaders who have influenced nutritional practices across their sports.
They've experienced the pressures of major competitions, managed the complexities of traveling with teams, and developed systems that deliver results in high performance environments and their own business. What makes our speaker lineup truly special however is their willingness to share openly about their methods, including the challenges they've faced and the lessons they have learned.
This level of transparency is rare in competitive sports and business environments but is central to the BlackBox philosophy of collective improvement through shared learning. Contrasted with this, given all of our speakers base their practice on high quality research, a selection of post-graduate and doctoral research from Birmingham City University’s Department of Sport & Life Sciences will be showcased, sharing some of their novel research projects in sports nutrition.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONFERENCE
BlackBox Nutrition Conference deliberately tries to be different.
BlackBox bridges this gap by bringing together high-profile practitioners and business owners who will share insights from the frontlines of performance nutrition and how to run a successful business, the kind of knowledge that doesn't appear in textbooks or research papers.
This conference isn't about presenting the latest studies or theoretical frameworks. It's about revealing complex realities of implementing nutrition strategies with elite athletes and teams whilst also showcasing the importance of brand building and visibility.
WHY BLACKBOX?
Our BlackBox conference name draws inspiration from two powerful concepts. First, Matthew Syed's "Black Box Thinking” which emphasises how industries evolve collectively through transparency about practices and lessons learned from mistakes.
And second, the "Black Box theory" in social science, which highlights our tendency to accept systems and processes without questioning their inner workings. In the world of performance nutrition, practitioners often operate within established frameworks without examining the nuanced implementation strategies that truly drive results.
The BlackBox Nutrition Conference aims to ‘lift the lid’ on these systems by creating a forum where experienced practitioners openly share their implementation methods, challenges faced, and lessons learned in real-world settings. It's about the challenges, the adaptations, the failures, and the breakthroughs that happen in the field.
It's about opening the black box of applied practice that remains largely undiscussed in universities and other conferences.

WHY ATTEND BLACKBOX NUTRITION CONFERENCE?
-
The BlackBox Nutrition Conference is specifically designed for performance nutritionists and sports dieticians who are navigating the critical early and middle stages of their careers.
This is the period where theoretical knowledge meets practical reality—often with challenging results. While your education provided you with scientific foundations, the BlackBox Conference bridges the gap between academic knowledge and effective real-world implementation.
As practitioners, you face unique challenges: establishing credibility, developing your professional approach, and learning to navigate the complex dynamics of working with athletes, MDTs, managers, and sports organisations.
All our speakers have walked this path before you and will share the insights they wish they had known at your stage—insights that can accelerate your professional development by years.
-
University degrees excel at teaching research methodologies, scientific principles, and evidence-based frameworks. What they don't always teach you is how to apply this knowledge in high-pressure environments with elite athletes who have unique needs, personalities, and circumstances.
Things we’ll cover:
a) How to translate scientific knowledge into practical interventions that athletes will actually follow.
b) The art of communication, collaboration, and influence within complex team environments.
c) How to navigate organisational politics and build effective working relationships with coaches and support staff.
d) Strategies for managing the unpredictable nature of applied practice, from travel logistics to crisis management.
e) Methods for measuring impact and demonstrating value beyond traditional metrics such as body composition.
f) The essentials of building a business and a brand which stands out from your peers
These are the skills that determine success in the field, skills that are rarely taught in formal education but are going to be openly shared at this conference by practitioners who have experienced them through years of practice.
-
The conversations that happen between sessions often prove as valuable as the presentations themselves.
The BlackBox Nutrition Conference will be a unique environment where meaningful connections can be made in a relaxed and professional atmosphere.
Networking shouldn’t feel overwhelming, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with peers facing similar challenges, potential mentors who can guide your career development, and possibly even future employers.
-
Many performance nutritionists are self-employed, operate as a consultant, or offer continuing remote services with little or no training on how to build a business and a brand.
The BlackBox Nutrition Conference will provides insight and lessons from practitioners who have not just excelled at the practical application science, but have built successful companies and brands.

The BlackBox
Giveaway
In keeping with our conference theme, we're excited to announce the chance to win a haul of prizes worth over £1,500, kept secretly in a giant box, whilst also offering you the chance to supporting the upcoming generation of nutrition practitioners. The contents of our prized black box will remain a mystery until the day of the conference, but we can say that its contents are ones you’ll want to win!
The BlackBox Prize
Supporting the Next Generation
What makes this prize draw special is its purpose. Our conference is committed to developing early-career practitioners. 100% of the proceeds from additional prize ticket sales will go directly towards either a) funding a young practitioner through their master's degree or industry-CPD, b) financial support during an internship for a year, or c) if they’re already suitably qualified funding towards business development and start-up costs.
This initiative addresses one of the most significant barriers to entry in our field - the financial challenges of advanced education and early career start-up costs. By purchasing additional prize tickets, you're not just investing in your chance to win £1,500’s of prizes, you're providing a lift up on to the career ladder for someone else.
Every conference attendee automatically receives one free entry into the prize draw as part of their ticket. The lucky winner will take home the contents of the BlackBox.

01
Team Sports Session
Dive deep into the unique challenges of implementing nutrition strategies in team environments. Our speakers are practitioners who work with elite teams across multiple sports and will share their approaches to managing diverse athlete needs within team structures.
Learn how they navigate the complexities of team dynamics, travel schedules, and varying positional requirements while maintaining nutritional excellence. This session will explore real-world case studies that demonstrate how departmental strategies and individual interventions are tailored and delivered.
Speakers will discuss their successes and failures, providing honest insights into what works, what doesn't, and why. You'll gain practical strategies for influencing team culture around nutrition and methods for scaling individualised approaches across large groups of athletes.
02
Individual Sports Session
Working with individual athletes presents distinct challenges and opportunities. In this session, practitioners supporting elite athletes from F1 to Golf will reveal their approaches from profiling to highly personalised programming.
Speakers will address the intimate nature of individual sport nutrition, how to build trust, manage expectations, and develop interventions that align with each athlete's physical needs and travel demands.
You'll learn strategies for supporting athletes through training cycles, competition periods, and recovery phases with nutrition protocols that enhance performance and longevity.
03
Business Development Session
Technical expertise alone doesn't guarantee a successful career in performance nutrition. This unique session addresses the often overlooked business aspects of our profession: how to market your services, build a sustainable practice, and demonstrate value to potential employers or clients.
Experienced practitioners will share insights on career progression, from establishing yourself in the industry to expanding your professional influence. Topics include effective communication with stakeholders, building your professional brand, multiple revenue streams, and creating systems that allow you to work efficiently.
